Where Can I Buy Primula Light Cheese in Ireland

A range of cheese products sold in Ireland are being recalled over fears they may contain a potentially deadly bacteria.

Ten batches of Primula's cheese spreads, which come in tubes, have been withdrawn from sale as the company could not "satisfactorily demonstrate" the safety of these products.

The precautionary recall is being carried out as one of its products might contain Clostridium botulinum.

The Food Safety of Ireland said this bacteria may produce dangerous toxins which can cause a "rare but serious" form of food poisoning.

A spokesman said: "Primula Ltd. (UK) is recalling the above Primula Cheese Spreads in tubes as manufacturing controls that could potentially affect the safety of these products could not be demonstrated satisfactorily by the company.

"A recall from consumers is being carried out as a precautionary measure because one product might contain Clostridium botulinum.

"Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated products.

"The issue relates to controlling factors to prevent the growth of toxin production by Clostridium botulinum.

"Botulinum toxin may cause a rare but serious form of food poisoning that can cause paralysis and can be fatal."

The World Health Organization said "botulinum toxins are one of the most lethal substances known".

More Primula products affected by the recall

Consumers are being advised not to consume the implicated products and retailers are being requested to remove them from sale.

Stores are also to display a point-of-sale recall notice where the affected products were sold.

Distributors are requested to contact their affected customers to advise them to recall the cheese range.

A spokeswoman for Primula told the Irish Mirror: "We have been making great quality cheese for almost 100 years.

"During routine testing, one of Primula's products was found to contain a source of Clostridium botulinum.

"Our customer's health and safety is our number one priority and therefore, as a precaution, we have stopped all product distribution.

"We have also instructed retailers to remove Primula tubes from shelves with immediate effect.

"Customers are also advised not to eat any Primula Cheese tubes they have already purchased, with the below best before dates, but instead to return these to stores in exchange for a full refund."
